The St. Micheal's Apheresis unit was the first of its kind in Canada. Before the 1980s Apheresis was not available for the treatment of T.T.P. Without treatment, 95% of patients die.
The staff, and in particular the Apheresis nurses, at St. Micheal's make the difference in a T.T.P. patient's road to recovery. It is hard not to be nervous when your blood is being drained, cleaned and infused over each 3 to 4 hour Apheresis treatment. But somehow the nurses make it okay. They take an interest in their patients, not just their illness.
The Apheresis Unit needs our help to buy a new machine. The oldest of St. Micheal's machines has become unreliable, despite regular maintenance, and needs replacement. Both machines are currently used simultaneously on a regular basis. The loss of one machine would be devastating for patients requiring treatment.
